The Los Angeles Rams will revamp their kicking game for at least one week after they elevated kicker Harrison Mevis and long snapper Jake McQuaide to the active roster on Saturday.
The move, in advance of Sunday's NFC West showdown against the San Francisco 49ers, comes days after Mevis was signed to the practice squad. Rams kicker Joshua Karty, a fifth-round draft pick in 2004, missed his fifth field-goal attempt last Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
Mevis, 23, was an All-America selection at Missouri and has spent time with the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets but has not appeared in an NFL game. In the UFL last season, Mevis was 20 of 21 on field-goal attempts for the Birmingham Stallions.
Karty has made 10 of his 15 field-goal attempts this season, leaving the Rams last in the NFL with a 66.7% success rate. He has also missed three of his 26 extra-point attempts.
McQuaide, 37, was the Rams' long snapper for 10 seasons through 2020. He has also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins but has not appeared in an NFL game this season. He has appeared in 197 games.
The Rams lost a Week 3 game at Philadelphia after they were lined up for a game-winning field goal on the last play of the game. The Eagles' Jordan Davis not only blocked Karty's kick with a rush up the middle, he returned the block for a touchdown. It was the second kick Los Angeles had blocked in the fourth quarter of the game.
