The New York Mets strengthened their bullpen by trading for San Francisco Giants right-hander Tyler Rogers on Wednesday.
The Giants received right-handers Jose Butto and Blade Tidwell and minor league outfielder Drew Gilbert in return. Tidwell, a starting pitcher, ranked as the Mets' No. 10 prospect while Gilbert stood No. 12 according to MLB.com.
A submarine-style pitcher, the 34-year-old Rogers is 4-3 this season with a 1.80 ERA, four walks and 38 strikeouts over 50 innings. His 53 appearances share the major league lead with Cincinnati's Tony Santillian and San Diego's Jeremiah Estrada.
Rogers led the National League in games pitched in 2024 (77), 2021 (80) and in the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 season (29).
He owns a career record of 26-20 with 19 saves, a 2.79 ERA, 74 walks and 296 strikeouts in 396 2/3 innings over 392 relief appearances.
The Giants selected Rogers in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Austin Peay State.
His identical twin brother, left-hander Taylor Rogers, also was traded on Wednesday. He went from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh in the deal that sent Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to the Reds.
Butto, 27, was 3-2 with one save, a 3.64 ERA, 22 walks and 41 strikeouts in 47 innings over 34 appearances with New York this season.
Tidwell, 24, was a second-round draft pick of the Mets in 2022 out of Tennessee. The rookie is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA, 10 walks and 10 strikeouts in 15 innings over four games (two starts) with New York. He was 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA, 32 walks and 87 strikeouts in 79 innings over 17 games (14 starts) for Triple-A Syracuse.
Gilbert, 24, was the Houston Astros' first-round pick in 2022. The Astros moved him to the Mets at the 2023 trade deadline as the biggest part of the package for Justin Verlander. Gilbert batted .246 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs in 81 games for Syracuse this season. He also batted .375 with two homers and six RBIs for Single-A St. Lucie.
