FRISCO, TexasThe road to recovery continues for Trevon Diggs but, at this juncture, inside the building with the Dallas Cowboys, his teammates and the new-look coaching staff. The All-Pro cornerback has recently spent time in South Florida doing rehab on his surgically-repaired knee, but is back at the team's headquarters for mandatory minicamp.
The most recent update on his status, provided by head coach Brian Schottenheimer following the third and final session of voluntary OTAs,reveals the needle on Diggs' recovery as aimed due north.
"It's going good," Schottenheimer said. "I talked to Trevon last week. He's down in Miami doing some training.:
Diggs missed several games last season after being placed on season-ending injured reserve to repair an issue in the same knee in which he suffered a torn ACL the year prior, when he missed all but two games during the 2023 season.
"No timeline for his return," said Schottenheimer. "But he had to come back a couple weeks ago to get checked out by the doc. All signs are positive."
It goes without saying that is great news regarding the record-setting former NFL interceptions leader (2021), especially when considering all of the factors surrounding the Cowboys' depth chart at quarterback.
Having lost Jourdan Lewis to the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, likely being without Diggs to begin the 2025 season will be something that's felt in a big way. Adding insult to literal injury is the fact there are others at the position returning from rehab as well, i.e.,., Caelen Carson (shoulder) and Josh Butler (ACL), who first have to work their way back to being cleared and then to top form in trying to help substitute for Diggs.
And Butler, unlike Carson but much like Diggs, is not expected to be ready when the season gets underway against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, or for some time thereafter.
The trade for Kaiir Elam is looked upon as one solution, but the need to figure out two positions nickel corner and outside corner creates questions on where All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland will line up, adding to the list of quandaries that require solutions.
But with Diggs at least progressing and in the building, the Cowboys feel there's a bright light at the end of this very long and twisty tunnel.
