PHILADELPHIA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- New Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso was happy with his side's performance on Thursday night as a 3-0 win over RB Salzburg took his side into the last 16 of the Club World Cup.
Alonso's team looked more cohesive in an evening kick-off and cooler temperatures, and he also commented the pitch in Philadelphia had been better than in previous matches.
On Thursday, the coach used a defensive system with three central defenders that brought him success in his previous job at Bayer Leverkusen.
"It's always been something I have been thinking about," admitted Alonso in his post-game press conference.
"The players have football intelligence to understand why we use that system and it gave us a lot of stability and control of the game. It allowed us to make good use of space and I like the flexibility," he added.
The game also saw an improved display from Vinicius Jr., who played in a central role and scored the opening goal as well as giving an assist, although Alonso focused on the work the Brazilian did in tracking back and providing defensive cover.
"It's allowed us to play together. In attack, he's had more freedom in the center," commented Alonso, who also had words for B-team striker Gonzalo, who netted his second goal of the tournament.
"What he does isn't a surprise; he's always in the right position, waiting for the opportunity, getting the chances and fighting for them. I'm very happy for him, but I'm asking him for more," he continued, refusing to be drawn on the young striker's future.
"There are no decisions regarding the start of the 2025-26 season... we're focused on the Club World Cup," concluded the Real Madrid coach.
