New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil is slated to undergo an MRI exam on Saturday after experiencing shoulder tightness during a bullpen session on Friday.
The outing was cut short not long after it began because the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year couldn't get loose.
'He just felt tight and wasn't able to really let it go,' New York manager Aaron Boone told reporters.
Gil, 26, worked 151 2/3 innings in 29 starts last season when he went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA. He limited batters to a .189 batting average and struck out 171 but walked 77, most in the majors.
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2022, which adds to the anxiety of this round of shoulder issues.
'Any time they pull themselves from a bullpen a couple of pitches in, that's concerning,' Boone said.
Also, Boone said that right-hander JT Brubaker was diagnosed with three fractured ribs, stemming from being hit with a comebacker off the bat of Tampa Bay's Kameron Misner on Feb. 21.
'He's actually doing pretty well, but it's going to cost him some time too,' Boone said of Brubaker.
Brubaker, 31, underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2023 and last threw a pitch in the majors in 2022 for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
