Company to showcase the Melzi Sharps Finder, a U.S. FDA registered device designed to locate lost needles and objects for use in laparoscopic, robotic and open surgery
Melzi Sharps Finder shown to detect lost needles with a 95% reliability rate[1]
RENO, NV / ACCESSWIRE / June 30, 2022 / Melzi Surgical ('Melzi' or the 'Company'), a surgical device company dedicated to creating innovative technologies that improve patient outcomes while reducing hospital expenses, today announced that it will participate at the Society of Robotic Surgery 2022 Annual Meeting being held June 30 - July 3, 2022 in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
During the Annual Meeting, the Company will be showcasing its Melzi Sharps Finder in the exhibition hall. The Melzi Sharps Finder is a sterile, single-use sharps detection device capable for use in robotic, laparoscopic, and open procedures.
Reid Rutherford, Co-Founder and CEO of Melzi, commented, 'We have thoughtfully developed a device, the Melzi Sharps Finder, which ultimately provides hospitals with a solution for locating needles and objects lost during surgery - a large and growing problem worldwide. Based on the data and positive feedback we continue to receive from surgeons across the U.S., we believe the Melzi Sharps Finder has the potential to be a game-changer in hospital operating rooms to find lost objects quickly and efficiently, potentially improving patient outcomes while reducing hospital expenses. We are grateful to showcase this device at such a prestigious event and look forward to connecting with all who attend.'
Over 390,000 sharp objects are lost during surgery each year in the United States[2] - a surgical event that can add up to 70 minutes to surgery[3], potential reputational damage to hospitals and physicians, and significant patient risk. The Melzi Sharps Finder was designed by surgeons who understand how frustrating and time-consuming it can be to search for surgical needles and sharps.
When a sharp is lost or miscount is identified, surgeons can activate the Sharps Finder to assist with the search in the surgical area. The use of the Melzi Sharps Finder is intended for preventing retained surgical sharps, reducing search time and resources during lost sharps events and minimizing risks to patients, hospitals and staff. The use of an adjunct technology, like Melzi Sharps Finder, can bring patient safety, time, financial, and risk benefits.
In a lab study, testing results show 13mm, 17mm, and 26mm needles detected at 95% reliability rate. Additionally, in two recently conducted evaluations of the Melzi Sharps Finder where time to locate (TTL), accuracy, and the time to decide (TTD) were recorded. All of the results from the evaluations were statistically significant.
Melzi is currently leveraging a network of surgical leader champions in key markets and a regional sales distributor network of contractors to establish early adoption. Based on the demonstrated benefit of the Melzi Sharps Finder to date, a number of top surgeons at leading hospital in the U.S. have incorporated the Melzi Sharps Finder into their patient safety armamentarium. The Company is working towards its planned aggressive national rollout and expansion of distributor network in order to grow awareness and adoption and ultimately drive sales in the United States.

About the Society of Robotic Surgery
This society is founded on the fundamental principles of education and collaboration as a means to tackle the complex issues of robotic surgery. This type of society gives us enormous possibilities in terms of multi-centric studies, database collection, fellowship training and funding support. We are an organization that will seek participation from residents and fellows and young faculty in the hope that we can assist them as they embrace robotics. The society is global with each continent having its own board and input into SRS activities. It is the pioneering spirit of our members and of our founding board that will make this society a success.
The Society of Robotic Surgery will encompass robotics, minimally invasive, NOTES and single port access surgery. This will provide the diversity to allow us to adapt to changes in technology and will provide an innovative forum in which to expand our horizons and improve our clinical and academic potential.
