After their game originally scheduled for New Year's Day was postponed, No. 25 UConn and Butler will square off twice in Big East Conference action this week, with Tuesday night's game in Hartford, Conn., and Thursday's follow-up in Indianapolis.
Butler (9-7, 2-3) will be trying to recover from Sunday's 40-point beatdown at Villanova, the Bulldogs' third loss in four games and part of a disturbing trend of blowout defeats against quality teams.
Butler shot 31 percent from the field, while Villanova made 60 percent of its shots. After trailing by 16 at halftime, the Bulldogs scored only 19 points and were outscored by 24.
"We didn't compete well enough from the jump and dug a hole that was hard to get out of," Butler coach Lavall Jordan said, noting that the Bulldogs must play better defense and increase their pace to be more competitive in the conference. "We'll pick ourselves off the mat and get ready for Connecticut coming up."
The Bulldogs has been drubbed by at least 15 points six times this season. Butler is being controlled on the boards in its conference games, with a minus-6.8 rebounding margin.
Chuck Harris (10-5) is the only Butler player scoring in double figures, although Bryce Golden (9.8), Jayden Taylor (9.6), and Jair Bolden (9.6) are close.
UConn (11-4, 2-2), had its Saturday game at Providence postponed, and will be playing for the first time since beating St. John's in overtime on Wednesday, 86-78.
Adama Sanogo's play continues to lead the Huskies. Sanogo scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in the win against St John's, following a 18-point, 16-rebound performance in a 90-87 overtime loss at Seton Hall on Jan. 8.
Sanogo is coming into his own after missing four games due to an abdominal injury earlier in the season.
"His abilities (Sanogo) are obviously high level. And he just has so much self-belief," UConn coach Dan Hurley said.
R.J. Cole leads the Huskies in scoring with a 16.4 average, followed by Sanogo's 15.9 and Tyrese Martin's 14.0.
The Huskies' 80.3 points per game ranks 24th nationally and their plus-15.1 scoring margin is 17th.
